Higurashi no Naku Koro ni

ひぐらしのなく頃に

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (when the cicadas cry) is one of the best series (not only anime) I have ever seen. At its core is a mystery with elements of both drama and comedy. What puts it apart from other series is its very complex plot, unfolding little by little in a masterful way. All main characters' personalities, background and motivations are explored in depth and from different perspectives. The series is an adaption (very faithful) of a series of doujin visual novels with the same name.

Visually the series is characterized by the overwhelming amount of gore and its loli character designs, which are effective both comedically and grotesquely, depending on the scene's context. Also noteworthy is the background artwork, which is very well done and renders effectively the appropriate atmosphere. The director also uses it to a great effect shifting from dark and moody backgrounds to light and cheerful scenery and vice versa, depending on what the script demands. Occasionally, the characters are drawn with extremely disproportionate and deformed faces (this was dropped during the second season), which sometimes is really creepy, but other times becomes ridiculous. The animation in general is fluid, but simple, no 3D, no fast-paced action scenes.

The voice acting is just excellent, not only adapting the characters' mannerism from the game, but also many voice actresses had to switch from their cute high-pitched octaves, to deep and brooding, to demented and frantic, etc. Also amazing and fitting thematically is the opening titles' song of the second season and in general the background music is effective, blending nicely with sound effects, without being outstanding.

The story takes place during the summer of 1983, at the rural village, Hinamizawa (雛見沢). The main character, Keiichi, moves in and befriends his new classmates Rena, Mion, Rika and Satoko, joining their after-school club activities, which consist mostly of card and board games. Hinamizawa appears to be a normal and peaceful, rural village, however, the tranquility abruptly ends after the annual Watanagashi Festival, a celebration to commemorate the local god, Oyashiro-sama. Keiichi learns that every year for the past years, one person is murdered and another goes missing on the day of the Watanagashi Festival. Keiichi himself soon becomes drawn into the strange events surrounding the Watanagashi Festival and Oyashiro-sama. In each story arc, he or his friends mentally break down and commit several murders. While it seems impossible to tell their delusions apart from the mystery of Hinamizawa, slowly the truth is revealed.

Maebara Keiichi
前原 圭一
Keiichi is the main protagonist in the "question" arcs. The son of a famous artist, his family recently moved to Hinamizawa after an unfortunate event involving him in their hometown. His charisma and remarkable talent for speech-making allow him to easily make new friends and become popular in the village. Early in the story, in the Onikakushi-hen and Tatarigoroshi-hen arcs, he is the one affected by the paranoia and driven to commit murder; however, the inner strength and unshaking belief in his friends he acquires in the other arcs are one of the keys to solving the mystery. Eventually, he is even able to recall some of the events of the past repetitions. When he needs a weapon, he uses Satoshi's old baseball bat.

Ryuguu Rena
竜宮 レナ
Rena is a girl who returned from Ibaraki to Hinamizawa one year ago, and is in same grade-level as Keiichi. She has an obsession with things she perceives as cute. Every now and then, she goes treasure hunting in the town's trash heap, searching for 'cute' things to collect, and upon finding something, it's difficult to stop her. She has a habit of repeating words at the ends of sentences, most famously kana? kana? (かな, かな literally "I wonder?") and when finding something cute, she says Hauu! Omochikaeri! (はう-! おもちかえり! literally "I want to take it home!"). Despite this disarming trait, Rena is shown to be amazingly observant and perspective about the things around her. According to Mion, while Rena might seem cute herself, people should be careful not to anger her as she becomes quite scary when angered. She is especially sensitive about the topic of Oyashiro-sama. When she needs a weapon, she uses a large cleaver that she found at the trash heap.

Sonozaki Mion
園崎 魅音
Mion is the oldest classmate in Keiichi's class. As the elder, she is the class president and everyone looks up to her as the leader. Her social skills are on par with Keiichi, whom she highly respects as a friend and rival (though it is later shown that she has a crush on him). She acts like a tomboy, but has a hidden girlish side. She is next in line to be the head of the Sonozaki household, one of the Three Families which holds tremendous influence in Hinamizawa. Right before tattooing the symbol of oni, which is reserved for the older sister, she was mistakenly identified as the older sister which means that she was actually born as Shion Sonozaki, the younger sister. Since then, she switched her identiy of Shion with Mion, the older sister. She is often seen with a holstered gun, even though she has never used it.

Sonozaki Shion
園崎 詩音
Shion is Mion's identical twin sister, who currently resides in Okinomiya. In spite of their different personalities, she and Mion often switch places, and it can be difficult to distinguish between them. Their first switch took place when they were little. Right before tattooing the symbol of oni, which is reserved for the older sister, she was mistakenly identified as Shion, the younger sister, which means that she was actually born as Mion Sonozaki, the older sister. Since then, she switched her identity of Mion with Shion, the younger sister. She was sent by the Sonozaki family to a private boarding school, but escaped and returned to live near her hometown, where she lives with Kasai. She was in love with Satoshi, and blames the Three Families of Hinamizawa for his disappearance, this drives her to mass murder. One of the last words that they exchanged before he disappeared was a promise to take care of Satoko, something which she has taken to heart. She works as a waitress at the Angel Mort restaurant and is the manager's assistant for the Hinamizawa Fighters little league team. She is often seen carrying a taser.

Houjou Satoko
北条 沙都子
Satoko is a younger classmate in Keiichi's school. She has a distinctive style of speech, ending all of her sentences with ~wa. In spite of her young age, she seems to have an impressive arm strength and is quite clever in setting up traps and likes to practice on Keiichi. Although her personality is quite energetic and mischievous, Satoko's past was full of trauma; her parents died in an accident, she was abused by her foster parents (her aunt and uncle) and her beloved brother Satoshi disappeared.

Furude Rika
古手 梨花
Rika is a younger classmate in Keiichi's school and is in the same grade level as Satoko. Naturally, she is great friends with her, as they live together in the same house. She is revered by the villagers as the heir of the local shrine, and plays the role of a miko in the annual Watanagashi Festival. She has been the head of the Furude house since her parents died, but rarely attends town meetings due to her young age. While she does not speak a lot, she likes to say nonsense words such as "mi~" and "nipa~", which inflame Rena's passion for cute things. She also likes to describe events using sound effects. In fact, she is one of the main components of the eternally repeating June 1983, and is the only one who is consistently able to remember the past repetitions. She believes she has lived over 100 years, but continues to act like a child in order not to alarm her friends. She is the only one able to see Hanyuu, who has been like an imaginary friend to her all her life. Despite her young appearance, she seems to be quite fond of red wine.

Hanyuu
羽入
Hanyuu always wears a miko outfit, and has a pair of dark colored horns. Despite she was perceived by Rika all her life, only in the last chapters did she interacted with others. She is the one responsible for the eternally repeating June 1983, which she created in order to save Rika's life. She's very meek and often makes the noise "Au au au…" when she's nervous or uncomfortable. She dislikes alcohol and kimchi, which Rika uses in large amounts when Hanyuu is being particularily annoying (both Hanyuu's and Rika's senses are linked together). Rika refers to her as Oyashiro-sama when talking with others, but does not treat her as a divinity; instead, she sees her as a close friend.

The plot unfolds in chapters (composed of several episodes), which are either a retelling from a different perspective of the same events or alternate version of them. This proved to be very effective, promoting the speculations from the audience, which added to the experience of viewing the series. Below, each chapter is described in detail, followed by screencaps and my opinion with spoilers, so beware ...

Onikakushi-hen
鬼隠し編
Spirited Away by the Demon Chapter
1st season, episodes 1-4
This chapter introduces the simple rural life of Hinamizawa, the after-school club activities and the friendships of the main characters. Excellent start having the murder scene at the beginning of the very first episode and then proceeding by presenting the innocent everyday life and introducing the main cast of characters. Rena is the only one that shows her delusional side, during this chapter, though it is not really explained until Tsumihoroboshi and Minagoroshi. Also she gets a great scene at the garbage pile at the end of the first episode. The whole chapter revolves around Keichi and how he is slowly plunged into paranoia, fueled by Oishi's informations as well as Rena's "not-so-innocent" pranks and finally leads him to a break-down, running amok and murdering Mion and Rena.

Watanagashi-hen
綿流し編
Cotton Drifting Chapter
1st season, episodes 5-8
This chapter also begins innocently, with the Watanagashi Festival again marking the start of the sinister events in Hinamizawa. In this chapter my favourite character is introduced, Sonozaki Shion. A partial explanation about the mystery murders is offered, but the whole truth is not unveiled until Maekashi. This chapter's excellence actually can not be realized until Maekshi is over, since both chapters play a lot with the perspective they present the same events.

Tatarigoroshi-hen
祟殺し編
Curse Killing Chapter
1st season, episodes 9-13
Keiichi attempts to help out a Satoko with drastic measures, but instead he sets in motion events that quickly get out of control and finally resulting to the extermination of the whole village. Tatarigoroshi, deals with the serious subject of child abuse, but this is its high point, because it really fails to create a suspensefull atmosphere as the previous two chapters and its theme is not very well integrated with the rest of the events and the setting.

Himatsubushi-hen
暇潰し編
Time Wasting Chapter
1st season, episodes 14-15
In contrast to the first three chapters, this chapter takes place before the events of the fateful summer of '83 and is shown through the eyes of Mamoru Akasaka, a young police investigator from Tokyo who comes to Hinamizawa in order to investigate a kidnapping of a politician's grandchild. Soon, he too becomes implicated into the mysteries of Hinamizawa. This chapter focuses on Rika Furude as being the key part of the mystery and gives an insight into the inner workings of the village.

Meakashi-hen
目明し編
Eye Opening Chapter
1st season, episodes 16-21
Meakashi consists of the events of Watanagashi told from the perspective of Shion Sonozaki, with only a few minor variations. In this chapter, the audience sees the true reason for the criminal's murderous actions in Watanagashi. The first hints of that which ties together the chapters are given. The plot structure is excellent, despite retelling the same story as Watanagashi, Maekashi is not repetitive and very emotionally involving. But remember this is the most bloody chapter in the whole series and the villain's actions go beyond the description of sadism. Finally, apart from being amazed with Shion's character, it was Rika's actions that really amazed me and actually set the scene for the second season.

Tsumihoroboshi-hen
罪滅し編
Atonement Chapter
1st season, episodes 22-26
In Tsumihoroboshi, Rena experiences a situation similar to Keiichi's in Onikakushi, as she is marginalized by the situation within her family and then falls victim to paranoia fuelled by information fed to her by Takano. It has a (seemingly) happy ending, although there is a sinister twist, revealed in the beginning of the second season, which consists this chapter's true ending.
Tsumihoroboshi is also very bloody, but never reaches the levels of Tatarigoroshi.

Saikai
サイカイ
Reunion
2nd season, episode 1
Mamoru Akasaka, with an assistant, visits the abandoned town of Hinamizawa in the year 2007 and meets Officer Oishi. They still wonder about the great disaster that decimated Hinamizawa and the connection to Miyo Takano's File No. 34. Rena shares with them the little knowledge she has about Rika's strange behavior shortly before the supposed "gas leak", and Akasaka recalls his meeting with the young Rika as well. Here we see what happened after the events of Himatsubushi. This is the true ending of that chapter and a pretty decent introduction into the second season (remember that the series was off air for half a year).

Yakusamashi-hen
厄醒し編
Disaster Awakening Chapter
2nd season, episodes 2-5
Yakusamashi is an anime original chapter that interweaves scenes from the first season's chapters while giving other information that connects to the last two chapters. Yakusamashi takes place in a scenario where Keiichi, Rena, Mion, Rika, Satoko, and Shion all attend the school without issue. In this chapter, Satoko notices Rika's odd behavior and hears her speaking of her inevitable murder; Rika denies Satoko's questions about it. Satoko later witnesses Rika trying to warn Tomitake, thus furthering her suspicion. Satoko then goes through a Tatarigoroshi-like situation, and dies in the hospital once knowing of Rena's message.

Minagoroshi-hen
皆殺し編
Massacre Chapter
2nd season, episodes 6-13
On the surface, Minagoroshi is the solution to Tatarigoroshi; however, it answers most of the major common mysteries of the previous arcs. It is told from the perspective of Rika Furude. Most notably, the true identity of the massacre's masterminds are revealed. Also Rika's odd behavior is explained, along with the introduction of the final major character, Hanyuu. Finally, this chapter has some very powerful scenes, like Satoko's cry for help (11th episode), the hounding of the main characters by Takano and Rika's murder (13th episode).

Matsuribayashi-hen
祭囃し編
Festival Accompanying Chapter
2nd season, episodes 14-24
After Minagoroshi, the mastermind of the murders was revealed. This time, all the pieces of the puzzle are in place. The last step for the characters to take is putting the pieces together in order to defeat the culprit, obtain the miracle, and break through the barrier of June 1983. But before that we are given Takano's background and circumstances. Some minor details are also explained and finally Hanyuu manifests and aids the characters. This chapter despite being the longest was not boring at any point, though do not expect sudden twists and turns, since Matsuribayashi is the result of a plan to undo the cursed fate of the last thousand something years.

Winter Season Preview

The new season is about to begin, so I am having a quick look at what anime are coming out this winter. It looks pretty "dry" compared to the upcoming spring. Five (out of twelve) shows are either continuations or retellings of older series.

At least, several series continue for the winter season (Bamboo Blade, Hayate no Gotoku, Rental Magic & Shana).

ウエルベールの物語 ~ 第二幕
Wellber no Monogatari Second Part
AniDB, ANN, Official

Description: After attacking her betrothed on her wedding night, Princess Rita fled in the company of the thief Tina to stay out of the hands of those pursuing her as well as understanding the intrigue surrounding the kingdoms. Continues from where the season stopped during the summer.
Opinion:
Though the character designs were good, the integration with the 3d CGs was horrible. Also the plot showed some promise (despite the steam-punk setting), but unfortunately was pretty much blown to pieces with the fillers, which really added nothing and only delayed character and plot development. Since the crew and cast is the same, I expect the same all over again.

ロザリオとバンパイア

Rosario to Vampire
AniDB, ANN, Official

Description: By a bizzare coincidence, Tsukune Aono has accidentally gotten himself admitted to a youkai acadamy, a school attended by monsters. Just when he thinks he`ll run away from there, he meets the beautiful girl Moka and his mood turns ultra happy. However, she transforms into her true form when the rosary on her chest is taken off, she`s a super vampire!
Opinion:
Based on a shounen manga and produced by GONZO. So expect a lot of fanservice, minimal plot, fluctuating budget and animation quality. The chief director is a newbie and the scriptwriter has made several decent mecha.

H2O~FOOTPRINTS IN THE SAND~

AniDB, ANN, Official
Description: Hirose Takuma has been traumatized by the death of his mother during his childhood years. He eventually transfered to the school in his mother’s home town in order to recover. It is there he met with three particularly strange girls. They include Kohinata Hayam, a girl who rejects any contact with other students. Kagura Hinata is a class leader who is kind but a little careless. The third girl is Otoha, an energetic girl who named herself a “fairy of time and sound”. Hirose Takuma, was traumatized by the death of his mother during his childhood. As he continued his school experience, Takuma tried to start afresh with his life, but with bullies like Tabata Yui and the past events haunting him, things look to be extremely complicated.
Opinion:
Harem/Drama that will "rock your soul", at least according to the tag line of its promotional video. Apart from the ridiculous tag line and my resentment of harem shows, I think this one will be very bad and boring, even capable of attaining the title of worst ever, after Kakyusei (the non-hentai one).

破天荒遊戯

Hatenkou Yuugi
AniDB, ANN, Official

Description: A young girl named Rahzel is booted out of her house one day by her father with the instructions to `see the world.` And so her journey begins, However, she won`t be doing it alone ... for she befriends a stoic young man named Alzeido seeking revenge for his father`s murder. Alzeido and Rahzel are like oil and water ... but even still, they feel strangely drawn to one another. This could be either the result of an underlying attraction -- or their shared powers with magic. And so, the two reluctant allies travel from town to town, using their powers to help the helpless, while discovering their own respective places in the world.
Opinion:
Based on a shoujo manga and produced by Studio DEEN. Not that bad, but the director has only worked thus far in children shows and the scriptwriter is responsible for Bartender, the abomination.

PERSONA -trinity soul-

AniDB, ANN, Official
Description: The story takes place in Ayanagi City facing the Sea of Japan, a futuristic city recovering from the “Simultaneous Multiple Languish Syndrome” ten years after the events of Persona 3. Kazato Shin, a high school student and his little brother Jun met up with their brother Ryo who is the chief investigator in the police force. Lately, strange events such as sudden disappearances started to occur. The syndrome, a situation where students are killed and turned into stone figures, is reviving. As Shin stumbles onto this phenomena, he releases a persona, a manifestation of his powers. What is this persona? Based on the Persona RPG game series for the Playstation, developed by Atlus.
Opinion:
I have not played Persona, but from the Shin Megami Tensei series, I pretty much loved Digital Devil. Expect occult mixed with technology and vagueness. I really hope this works out well, because this season doesn't have anything else really new and interesting.

さよなら絶望先生 第2期

Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei Dainiki
AniDB, ANN, Official

Description: Itoshiki Nozomu is the world’s most negative person. To his way of thinking, there is no hope or meaning in this existence. Even the three kanji of his name become the two-kanji word zetsubou, “despair”, when compressed. He always thinks of suicide but was stopped by a student named Fuure. With the really strange and unique students in his class, Nozumu’s suicidal adventures goes on. Sequel of the summer's season.
Opinion:
I would really like to see some of Kafuka's dark past, I'm pretty sure she is completely insane. Anyway, first season started really strong, but I lost my excitment half way, because it was very difficult to follow what was going on, without subs. On a sidenote, I really love the music (both background and soundtrack) and SHAFT does not stop to amaze me with its weird character designs.

true tears

AniDB, ANN, Official
Description: Dreams, hopes, and aspirations are things that all people draw their visions of what the “future” may hold for them. This game adaptation (though having absolutely nothing to do with the game) talks about secrets and dreams, and how your choices will close up the hearts of the girls. The game was a schedule-based dating sim (NOT hentai) where your decisions could close off the heart and the secret of each girl.
Opinion:
A Romance by Broccoli? This is weird! Directed by Nishimura Junji (Simoun, Ranma, etc).Series Composition by Okada Mari (Simoun, Kodomo no Jikan). Finally, the studio, P.A.Works, has done in-between animation for some visually amazing series like Mushishi, Chevalier and GitS. This can be either wonderful or completely worthless, only time can tell.

シゴフミ

Shigofumi
AniDB, ANN, Official

Description: A story about a miracle, involving Fumika, a quiet but hard working girl who wears a uniform of a mail carrier, and her talkative staff and partner Mayama. The Shigofumi is a posthumous letter, the last resort of relaying a deceased person`s last message to his/her loved ones: family, friends, and significant other.
Opinion:
Based on a light novel series and produced by J.C.Staff. The crew is pretty good, they have worked in Stellvia (director, scriptwriter), Nadesico (director), Kino no Tabi (character designer), among others. The concept seems uninteresting, but I guess/hope it will be the driving force for some interesting stories, as was the case with Kino no Tabi.

みなみけ~おかわり~

Minami-ke ~Okawari~
AniDB, ANN, Official

Description: Minami-ke is a manga following three sisters, Haruka, Kana, and Chiaki in their lives at home and school. It’s a funny series that depicts how these characters interact with each other and their classmates. It’s a story about ordinary girls and their ordinary adventures told in an extraordinary manner. This is a different take with Kana as the youngest sister, and Chiaki the middle sister.
Opinion:
I don't really know what to expect, I like Minami-ke, but it is hardly original, though still fun ... so what can an alternate telling offer?

ARIA the ORIGINATION

AniDB, ANN, Official
Description: Aqua and Aria take place in the twenty-fourth century, on the planet Aqua (formerly Mars), which has been terraformed into a habitable planet covered in oceans and seas. The series is the story of Akari, an apprentice gondolier with Aria Company, one of the three most popular gondola companies in the city. She is training to become a full-time gondolier, or undine, as they are called in Neo-Venezia.
Opinion:
Based on the seinen mangas Aria and Aqua. I found the previous season boring, so I won't really bother with this one.

ガンスリンガー ガール 2nd シリーズ

GUNSLINGER GIRL -IL TEATRINO-
AniDB, ANN, Official

Description: When the Social Welfare Agency investigates the disappearance of an operative, their inquiry leads them right into the lair of their rival, the Five Republics. The assassin Triela infiltrates the hostile organization, but her search is cut short when she finds herself staring down the barrel of a gun.
Opinion:
I liked the original series back from 2004, but after four years I don't really know what to expect. The writer is the same, this time along with the director of Ghost Hunt.

狼と香辛料

Ookami to Koushinryou
AniDB, ANN, Official

Description: Lawrence is a traveling merchant who finds a 600 year old pagan deity/wolf girl named Horo in his wagon one night. She begins traveling with him, and her wisdom helps increase his profits. But her true nature draws unwanted attention from the church...
Opinion:
Character Designs by Kuroda Kazuya (Chrno Crusade, Kaibutsu Oujo, Sakura Taisen, Sora/Mizu no Iro, VanDread), but director and scriptwriter have a guilty past (Cosprayers, Love Love, Jinki, Kurumi, ...). The concept seems uninteresting, but as with Shigofumi, can be the driving force for good stories, though for Ookami it is less likely.

10 TV series you must see

I am not really a big TV fan, hell I don't even have a TV home, I could never really find any point in owning one. But there are 10 exceptions, which challenged my mindset. These "live-action" series are the best moments that TV offered. Some of them have actually defined gernes, while others are the best of their kind, but all are pretty much better then 99% of the films that are produced each year.

Twin Peaks
1990-91, 30 episodes, ~48 minutes each
TV-tropes, IMDb, wiki, official
By far the best series that has ever aired! Especially the central plot is amazingly complex, with an intricate and unique mythology that will amaze anyone who can pay attention to it. That is not to say that the side-plots of the second seasons arcs are not good, though some better then others.
Unfortunately the series has many shortcoming. Distributors and networks never liked this innovative and unorthodox series, they always wanted something mainstream and politically correct to air, so the time-slot the series got was late-night, to reduce the potential audience, the DVD-rights were scattered so people must thoroughly search to acquire the series as it was conceived and intended to be seen, etc. It is really a pity that people with power intentionally feed others with trash, in order to maintain their power, instead of "guiding" them, in order to acquire equivelent and competative peers [/end-of-rant].
Desppite these shortcoming, the creators (David Lynch & Mark Frost) have created an amazing series that really worths the trouble to acquire it.

Carnivale
2003-5, 24 episodes, 45~60 minutes each
TV-tropes, IMDb, wiki, official
An attempt to recreate Twin Peak's atosphere, though in a different setting. Hell, it even stars the dwarf from Lynch's works! Visually stunning, though somewhat lacking in storytelling, specifically the plot's unveiling is rather flat, never climaxing or drawing attention. Originally, the series was conceived in 6 seasons, but low ratings cut it short after the first two. Despite this the major plot-lines reach a closure, though not all questions posed are answered.

Riget
(aka The Kingdom)
1994-97, 8 episodes
IMDb I, IMDb II, wiki
Danish mini-series about a haunted hospital. This is a masterpiece, despite its low-budget, the acting is over-the-top, directing and storytelling were original and still very influential (outside Hollywood). The sad part is that the actors of major characters died before Lars von Trier had a chance to shoot the third part of the series, thus there is no closure to the series.

Neverwhere
1996, 6 episodes, ~30 minutes each
TV-tropes, IMDb, wiki
Another low-budget mini-series, this time from the island, later reworked into a novel by its creator, Niel Gaiman. Originally, shot for a VHS release, later rework to become a film, to finally be aired on the TV. This Odyssey, led to significant loss in quality, but added to the weird atmosphere of the plot. Acting might seem below average in the beginning, but it is loyal to the inhuman nature of the characters. All-in-all, it is a very different from what you can usually see.

Six Feet Under
2001-05, 63 episodes, ~60 minutes each
TV-tropes, IMDb, wiki, official
Slice of life show, though not your run of the mill life. The cast is not composed of the average stereotypes you usually see in series, despite the fact that they are ordinary (maybe too ordinary) people. Episodes are usually centered around a funeral, which the Fisher family organizes, while exploring slowly the life of the family itself. The storytelling balances, almost perfectly, between drama and comedy ... expect a lot of nihilism and black humor ;-)

Northern Exposure
1990-95, 110 episodes, ~45 minutes each
TV-tropes, wiki
Nihilistic and dark, but still a show everyday life and the extra-ordinary strength that requires to face reality without getting depressed for not being an idiot and see things for what they are. Visually it very close to Twin Peaks and also features extensive dream sequences, as well as symbolism, though there no intricate mythology behind it.

Millenium
1996-99, 68 episodes, ~43 minutes each
TV-tropes, IMDb, wiki, official
Dark and brooding series about occult, fused masterfully in a modern setting. Created by Chris Carter, who also created X-Files, the show centers around Frank Black (played by Lance Herniksen) as a profiler and investigator. The shows three season have significant differences in theme, mood and structure because the executive committee was every time totally different. Also the series ends without resolving all mysteries, some kind of closure can be found in an X-Files episode, featuring the character of Frank Black, which fortunately was included with the DVD release of the series.

Buffy
&
Angel
1997-2003, 144 episodes, ~42 minutes each (Buffy)
TV-tropes, IMDb, wiki, official (Buffy)
1999-2004, 110 episodes, ~42 minutes each (Angel)
TV-tropes, IMDb, wiki, official (Angel)
Ridiculing and breaking stereotypes is the trademark of both shows. Buffy is a petite, no-so-bright and kind of slutty cheerleader, who instead of being a monster's victim is its slayer. On the other hand Angel moves away from the adolescence angst, which is abundant in Buffy and deals with adulthood, still with a healthy dose of comedy accompanying its neo-noir setting.

Battlestar Galactica
2004-2008, 73 episodes, ~42 minutes each
TV-tropes, IMDb, wiki, official
This was the first non-anime sci-fi series that I actually enjoyed. It distances itself form the commercial mass-production cousins (StarTrek, Babylon 5, Stargate, etc) by fusing mysticism and occult to a degenerate gerne. Also there is very critical commentary on war and religion, which most modern series avoid like hell.

The Giovanni in LotN

The final article is up ... finally ;-)

Giovanni got very little good toys in this set, but as I was going through older sets and decks to write this article, I realized that this was always the case with the lewd necromancers :-(

So let's start with the worse part ... the crypt. Eric is a decent potence weenie in the wrong group, Stephan wastes his second discipline with presence, Nunzio with two in-clan at inferiors is actually good at the G4/5, Kay has protean, which could possibly be utilized in a deck build around that discipline and finally Primo is the standard 4-cap with 3 in-clan at inferior.
At mid-caps, Margaret is the standard anarch, Francis is the only vampire below 7 with superior necromancy, Accorri with superior dominate and along with Gianmaria all three have superior potence. Paolo is the first solid vampire with interesting options, considering his off-clan disciplines. Diego & del Giorgio at 8-cap are the youngest with all in-clan superior, while the later has an extremely useful ability and superior protean.
The high-caps still suffer from useless disciplines. Guillaume is saved by his two amazing specials. Lorenzo is exactly the opposite with an offensive combat special and potence as his sole combat discipline! Constancia is the only one with useful off-clan discipline, but her ability is mediocre the least and finally Luna has a good voting special, but no voting discipline! on the other hand her superior obfuscate can be useful for the Puppeteer decks.
I hoped for some support to proxy kissed + dead hand (NEC/pot + for), but instead there is one vampire with superior necromancy below 7! and the one with fortitude pays for it extra! while the other is a 10-cap!

The discipline distribution now in G4/5 is:
POT/pot -> 9/14 (23)
NEC/nec -> 10/13 (23)
DOM/dom -> 7/13 (20)
PRE/pre -> -/6, useless at inferior
PRO/pro -> 2/2
FOR/for -> 2/2
CEL/cel -> 1/3, too few for combat
AUS/aus -> 1/3, only for revealation
OBT/obt -> 1/2, useless
ANI/ani -> -/3, even more useless
THA/tha -> 1/1, for Magic of the Smith
one with CHI or OBF // probably in star decks
one with vic or dem // ignore them

The clan cards include Swiss Cut, which is a limited HG, unless someone has lost his mind and plays investments. Diary and Shell Break, while not bad themshelves are very hard to utilize. Tye is a nice alternative to Gregory Winter for finishing off beaten minions. Charigger isn't really a big benefit for a clan with dominate and finally the Promise is powerful against Camarilla.
Necromancy didn't get the support I expected. Chair of Hades is at least effective against the Imbued, but Resume the Coil and Soul Feasting are unbelievably bad (reminding me the AH/DS days). Shroudsight is useful to specific decks and Trochomancy (+ auspex) is very good for the Harbingers, but not the Giovanni since only four have auspex. Finally, Cold Aura could crawl into decks in certain metagames.
Dominate's Command the Legion is a solid addition, Murmur of the False Will is giving versatility and Autonomic Mastery is just decent.
Potence got also some strong cards, but without some kind of defense it loses it's value. Preternatural Strength can also save card slots by reducing or removing TS. Brute Force seems to me unecessary, on the other hand Slam gives a much needed maneuver and Street Cred is also nice addition to combat decks.
Finally, we got some pretty interesting cards without requirements. Bundi can be combined with IG and save slots from combat and Malajit offers additional stealth. The more significant cards though are aiding the Shambling Hordes and these are Leverage, Forearm Block, Target Head, Target Leg and Target Vitals.

The main problem a new player will face is the crypt. Not only the new vampires are inferior to the old G2/3, but getting your hands on the rest of G4 is hard. Gualtiero is the only worthy necromancer in Legacies of Blood, Raphaela and Don Michael are in Kindred Most Wanted. The two Giovanni with fortitude are even harder to find, since Benedict was only in the Alastor Starter and Baldesar is in Gehenna boosters. In general Legacies of Blood has some useful cards, but more importantly gives access to the three bloodlines with necromancy (Samedi, Harbingers and Nagaraja). Kindred Most Wanted on the other hand, offers more useful library cards, but does not really extend the horrible crypt options. Finally, Gehenna is a further example of next to zero useful crypt cards but has several powerful library cards.
3rd Edition not only offers some staple cards (Obedience, Scouting Mission (BH:Tr4), Delaying Tactics, Trap), but also has a lot of other useful ones, either for trade or to utilize the off-clan disciplines, especially if you take advantage of the bloodlines. The older base set (Camarilla Edition) has also some staple (Govern the Unaligned (FN:PG2), Seduction (BH:PTr2), Deflection (BH:PTr4, FN:PG2), Bonding (BH:Tr4)) and has the same advantages with the new base set. The problem is that it is hard to locate it.
A cheap alternative is the Tremere Antitribu starter from the Black Hand (NOT the 3rd Edition) since it has most of the dominate cards you will need. The old Giovanni from Final Nights has also a lot of useful cards, but more importantly gives you access to the old G2/3 crypt. And I also should note that three powerful cards (Spiritual Intervention (10th:B), Carlton Van Wyk (10th:B), Liquidation (10th:B)) can be found in the 10th anniversary set B.
Final Nights doesn't really offer anything significant apart from Charisma. It has useful cards and is worth buying, but given the difficulty to find boosters, I do not think it is worth the effort. On the other hand if you aim at making G2/3 crypts you will probably be more motivated ;-)

With the same limitation I used for the other three clans, I managed to put up a decent bruise-bleed deck for casual games. Pay attention that it has limited maneuvers (Slam) and damage prevention (Forearm, Armor & Undying), thus it will crumble against dedicated combat. Also the limited amount of IGs will be incapable of dealing with S:CE and without Dead Hand there is no way to deal with damage prevention. The bleed threat is also limited, but this is intentional, you could always include the conditionings from the starters, if you see that your metagame is neither bounce or intercept heavy.

There two ways to improve this deck (both removing combat). First, you can double or triple the Shambling Hordes and get your hands on Liquidation to boost ash heap recursion. The other is to focus on power-bleed, by increasing the stealth and block denial, as well as bleed-bounce and combat defense. In both cases you will need additional starters and the 10th anniversary preconstructed. A third option is to focus on potence, but this has not proven very successful in tournaments and the learning curve is pretty steep, so I would not suggest it to new players, even for casual games.
