With several shows that I enjoy carrying on from spring; add 14 new ones, plus Haruhi new episodes, Zetsubou Sensei 3rd and Ookami 2nd season; this summer looks very promising! The highlights are of course Canaan from the Type-Moon team, Umineko from Higurashi creators and SHAFT's second TV show this season.

Adaptation of Sega and Chunsoft’s 428 ~Fuusa Sareta Shibuya de~ visual novel for the Wii, titled CANAAN. It tells a present-day story about a detective, a young man, a virus researcher, a freelance writer, and a cat mascot character who are brought together by bizarre events with worldwide implications in the Tokyo neighborhood of Shibuya. Finally, some new material from TYPE-MOON; don't get me wrong I love Rakkyo, but since I have read the novels it is hardly new to me. Anyway, having confidence in the source and an experienced writer in series composition, plus a good director raises a lot my expectations. But especially for people who are unfamiliar with TYPE-MOON games, whether the anime lives up to the legacy of Rakkyo will be unoticeable ;)

Umineko no Naku Koro ni takes place in the year 1986, during the time frame of October 4 and October 5 on a secluded island named Rokkenjima (六軒島, Rokkenjima). The head of a wealthy family named Kinzo Ushiromiya, who lives on and owns Rokkenjima, is near death, and eight of his family members arrive on the island to discuss how Kinzo's assets will be divided once he is dead. Also on the island are three family members who live there, five of Kinzo's servants, and his personal physician. After the eight family members arrive, a typhoon traps them on the island and shortly after people start to get mysteriously murdered. [AniDB]

Higurashi, without lolis and good character designs. Most of the staff is the same, while on the VA front there are also strong presences. In any case, I expect a strong mystery and hope it will not take that prolonged off-air break that Higurashi suffered from.

Bakemonogatari centers on Koyomi Araragi, a third year high school student who is almost human again after briefly becoming a vampire. One day, a classmate named Hitagi Senjougahara, who infamously never talks to anyone, falls down the stairs into Koyomi's arms. He discovers that Hitagi weighs next to nothing, in defiance of physics. After being threatened by her, Koyomi offers her help, and introduces her to Meme Oshino, a middle-aged homeless man who helped him stop being a vampire. In each chapter of the series, he encounters a different heroine, each involved with a different "apparition". The events of the previous chapters play an important role in the subsequent ones. The series primarily focuses on conversations between characters; it contains a fair number of parodies of other series, as well as Nisio Isin's trademark wordplay and metahumor. [AniDB]

The plot sounds promising, the studio is tried and tested, the chief director has created some psychedelic OPs and there is always Shinbo to back-up. Also another plus is the return of the character designer from SoulTaker. Finally, lets not forget the excellent BGM scores that the studio always manages.

Third TV adaptation (4th overall, including an OVA) of Kouji Kumeta’s manga. The anime revolves around a very pessimistic high school teacher named Nozomu Itoshiki who, at the very beginning of the series, tries to hang himself on a sakura tree. Despite this effort of self-destruction, he is saved by an extremely optimistic girl known only as Kafuka Fuura. After having enough of the strange girl, Nozomu bolts to the school and starts his homeroom class, but the attempt to escape was in vain as he finds that the girl is one of his students. Not only that, but Kafuka is just the tip of the iceberg: each and every student in his class represents a new personality quirk or bizarre obsession, posing challenges that the suicidally-inclined teacher must overcome in spite of himself. I do not really have something special to say, if you liked the previous seasons, you'll obviously like this one too.

Second season of the adaptation of Isuna Hasekura’s light novels. For the second season, the former animation studio (IMAGIN) has been replaced by Brains Base as the studio primarily responsible for animation production. Craft Lawrence is a peddler who trades in various kinds of goods, visiting every village by cart. After he leaves the town of Pasroe, which was in the midst of a harvest festival, he finds a girl sleeping on a pile of fur in his cart. She is a beautiful girl, but she has the ears and tail of a wolf. She calls herself Horo - the Sage Wolf Horo - god of the harvest. Her craft is the art of conversation, and even Lawrence, an experienced peddler, is outmaneuvered by her. Although he doubts her identity as a god, he is moved by her wish to return to her home in the north, and so he promises to go with her. [AnimeNfo]

I loved the first season, but I understand the concerns of many people about digging too deep into the settings background through long dialogs. On the other hand judging from the OVA and PV, I expect that it will be toned down and the focus will shift to relationships, which was one of the strongest points of the first season along with the BGM and Horo's character designs.

Seinen Action Comedy by Madhouse a studio that I love and hate. As usual for them there is no promo around, staff is coming from varying works and we are left only with a short description to draw conclusions. Honestly I have no idea what to expect.

The story is about two 14-year-old Japanese high school girls named Koume and Akiko who decide to start a baseball team in Japan in 1925. At the time, few baseball teams — male or female — exist in the country. First though, the two girls have no clue where to find nine players, how to use the equipment, and what even the rules are. Seinen All-Girl Baseball anime set in Taishou era ... from J.C. Staff. Well, if it wasn't for the studio and the director, I would have certainly ignored this one. If the source is decent though and does not degrade to some sports anime it has potential.

Shortly after, Fumi began dating a cool, attractive upperclassman who, coincidentally enough, had ties to Akira's current school, the prestigious Fujigatani Girls' Academy. [Lililicious]

Shoujo-Ai from J.C. Staff, hm ... I can not remember this combo, but anyway, the studio has an excellent track at romance and a decent one at adaptions, plus it has the director of Nodame Cantabile, so fans of the gerne rejoice!

The "transforming magical girl action" story centers on Marin and Urin, two "pure" sisters who live alongside the fish in the sea, but yearn to be in the world beyond the water and above ground. One day, a beautiful ring falls in the middle of the sea, and Marin and Urin retrieve it. The two decide to leave their waterbound world for the first time to deliver the ring. After an arduous journey, they come across an isolated island where a high school girl named Kanon lives. The encounter between Marin and Kanon — the maiden of the sea and the maiden of the skies — awakens a hidden power as the world is threatened by an enveloping darkness. [ANN]

The first thing that drew my attention were the beatiful character designs, unremarkably though as I noticed who did them (Wellber's high point was again the character ddesigns). Anyway, the studio and directors have a very good record at bishoujo gerne and the original comes also from an exerienced writter. My only fear lies with the series composition, especially this gerne can be extremely boring and very slow to pick up its pace.

School Rumble team (give or take), returns with another slice-of-lice, romantic comedy. Kind of repetetive, IMHO ... in any case I'll give it a shot just in case.

Juuden-chan is the name given to a group of special girls who work as OL (office ladies) during the day and have a special mission to use electricity to cheer up (recharge) depressed people. Depressed people are graded into different levels of danger. At level A, they are at highest risk of suicide and are a danger to themselves. To help these people, a company is established which dispatches the invisible Juden-chan to help charge them up. Unfortunately the main character is new at her job, and often makes mistake and causes trouble. But she still manages to save people, but usually through some alternative means. [AniDB]

The story will center on Mirai, a middle school freshman girl who goes to Tokyo's artificial Odaiba Island for a robot exhibition with her brother Yutaka at the start of summer vacation. A powerful tremor emanates from an ocean trench, the famed Tokyo Tower and Rainbow Bridge crumble and fall, and the landscape of Tokyo changes in an instant. With the help of a motorcycle delivery woman named Mari who they meet on Odaiba, Mirai and Yutaka strive to head back to their Setagaya home in western Tokyo. [ANN]

Is this the revival of the gerne? What will be next, Fuji errupting, typhons, tsunamis ... now on a more serious tone, BONES is a good studio, but as of lately it tries to be more commercial than creative.

To be honest I wasn't expecting this so soon. Anyway it was another welcome surprise and despite prefering the previous studio's character designs, this time around storytelling is more coherent and from what I hear closer to the manga. On the other hand I somewhat liked the diverging from the source during the last run. Anyway, a solid pick for its gerne.

Dunno people, I am not into these militaristic crap, war is depicted too cartoonish for my taste, on the other hand it is a cartoon. Anyway, most characters fall flat in the personality department and most situations are somewhat oversimplified to fit a black'n'white plot, with a couple of twists. But none-the-less, I must acknowledge the animation and art style.

Hoping that this is not just a extra and that new episodes will air chronologically, we should expect The Endless Eight in four weeks, after Mysterique Sign and Lone Island Syndrome (originally episodes 6-8). Afterwards follows The Sigh, which has to do with the filming of Mikuru's Adventures, then the festival episodes (originally episodes 1 & 11-12) to finally reached The Disappearance, which was advertised a couple of years ago.

The episode itself was a welcome surprise, but it has some issues. First the art took a hit as all of KyoAni's latest productions. Animation was also minimal, compared with the treat of the first season. Especially the character designs of Mikuru and to a lesser extend of Haruhi, seem influenced heavily by 4-coma styles. Also the VAs seemed to struggle at parts to get back to their original characterization, but this is expected since three years have elapsed. Plot-wise, the episode was loyal to the novel, at least as far as I can remember since it's been quite some time since I read it.

All in all, if they continue to show new material, I am willing to forgive all this trolling and moe-crap they threw at us during the last three years, but both companies have a very bad record, so better don't get your hopes up.

Excellent animation and incorporation of 3D mech design. The theme was also a little heavier then the anime norm, but was well handled and avoided childish over-simplifications. What IMHO hurted the series was its short length, especially when one takes into account the 10+ volumes of the novels it was based on.

Plot-wise the second season was better then the first, actually "meatier" since there was resolution. What the season lacked was Keisei's character. Anyway, the annoying VAs improved a little, with the exception of Ouri. Action was OK, especially during the last episode. In general a good action show.

Pulling out 50+ episodes is a terrible difficult feat and Synergy managed it for a second year. Otherwise, animation and especially art varied wildly, especially when GONZO got involved. As for story and characters, it was enjoyable, but I never really got into it as with other shows.

Spring '09 Previews

There are several interesting facts about this spring season. First with the exception of FMA, Hayate and Polyphonica, all other series are new. Another noteworthy fact is that all series are adaptions from manga, novels or games with Eden and Basquash as the only exceptions! As for my expectations ... mediocre, traditionally spring has been the season for the masses (aka male, chaste, teenager geeks). The thing is that the only shows I am watching from winter and continue are Regios and SoraKake, so I guess I'll try everything (even hardcore shoujo, mecha basketball and noitaminA).

After losing their mother, Alphonse and Edward Elric attempt to bring her back using the forbidden science of human alchemy. However, alchemy operates on the theory of equivalent trade, and breaking the human alchemy taboo carries a heavy price. Ed loses his leg, and Al loses his body. Ed is able to seal Al's soul inside of a huge suit of armor, at the cost of his arm. Years later, Ed (now with two mechanical limbs) and Al (still trapped in the armor) leave their childhood home, each brother concerned with the other's happiness. Ed, who has a natural talent and skill for alchemy, becomes nationally certified and is soon known everywhere as the "Fullmetal Alchemist." Their true objective is to search for any information on the fabled Philosopher's Stone, hoping it will allow them to regain their old bodies. All of their hopes rest with this mythical stone, which may not even exist at all. However, the brothers soon learn that they are not the only ones after the powerful stone.

Five years after the original ended BONES decides to remake it, probably because the manga is about to end (which is an unverified rumor). Anyway, almost all the technical stuff is different, but given the popularity and extent of the source plot-wise it shouldn't diverge too much. I expect top quality animation as was the case with most of the studio's projects, but I am really worried with the storytelling, since the person responsible has several fails in the past. Finally, I should admit that I liked the previous adaption, despite being a shounen ... at least at some points it certainly made me forget it!

16-year-old Hayate is really down on his luck. Because his unemployed parents are good-for-nothings who waste what money they have on gambling, Hayate had to start working at a young age to help out his family. Although such experience has made him inhumanly fast and tough and skilled at things boys aren't normally skilled it, it has also left him in an awkward position, as his parents have racked up such a huge gambling debt that they have sold Hayate to the yakuza for the value of his organs. In a desperate attempt to avoid that fate, Hayate decides to become a “bad guy” and kidnap someone to be held for ransom, but his efforts to do so are mistaken as a confession of love by the girl he targets. When he helps save the (as it turns out) ultra-wealthy 13-year-old Nagi from real kidnappers, she takes him in and gives him a job as her new personal butler (and love interest) until he can pay off his debt. But Hayate is more attracted to Nagi's beautiful teenage maid Maria, and head butler Klaus is initially disapproving of the boy with such a poor look. And then there's Nagi's pet Tama, who is also a force to be reckoned with.

For a better insight just go and download the the OVA! I really loved the first season, if for no other reason because the fillers were very well thought of and the pacing was quite successful (not an easy task with 50 episodes). But now with a new studio, which has a shameful reputation for its failure at fillers, things look somewhat alarming. Fortunately series composition is at the hands of the same person with the first season; as for the rest of the staff, they have done quite a lot of good shows. The OVA or episode S2E0, is a good indication of what the show has to offer.

The manga features a series of short stories about eight girls in middle school and high school, plus their classmates and relatives. Each chapter focuses on a different main characters. These stories are entertwined and eventually lead to a main story involving most of the cast.

The second show this season from J.C.Staff, this time a romance from the author of hated Ichigo 100% (which personally I do not find it that bad, rather mediocre ... probably because of the related NishiMIDI doujinshi). Now given that all stuff have next to zero track record, I have no idea what to expect.

The story is set in a neo-futuristic age, in which Tokyo has turned into the world’s largest “jungle-polis” that absorbs carbon dioxide. A tower city called Atlas houses the rich and privileged, and is the object of yearning of all that are not allowed to enter. But Atlas also has ancient secrets which cause a sudden whirl of events. Festooned by colorful characters such as a riotous teenage girl, a child genius, a juvenile princess, a drag queen, a female doctor, an army major, and an elderly gentleman and lady, SHANGRI-LA’s hard-core world view plays out as an anime action saga.

Now let me proceed to the GONZO shows, starting with their green-left rip-off! What to expect from the worst japanese studio about to fire 75% of its personnel, a stuff composed of a group of newbies, except from Ounogi, who failed several time to pace properly a show?

Unfortunately, I could not locate a promo!

Saki Miyanagi, a high school freshman, hates mahjong because her family would always force her to play it and punish her regardless of if she won or lost. Because of this, she learned how to keep her score at zero, neither winning nor losing. However, her friend from middle school convinces her to join the school's Mahjong Club. After the Club discovers her ability, they recruit her and convince her to win instead of breaking even. She easily does so with her skill, so the team enters a mahjong tournament so that its members may reach the national competitions.

Mahjong meets Pokemon ?!?!? in a harem version? from the director of Dragonaut and character designer of Erotic Torture Chamber !?!?! No thanks!!!

Adapted from the MMORPG Arad Senki originally developed in South Korea under the name Dungeon & Fighter. The anime will follow the adventures of Baron, a man living on continent of Arad in the year 981 after "the cursed light of Kazan" has fallen across the land. Thanks to the curse, one of his arms has become possessed. After finding a sword that has been possessed by the spirit Roxy, he embarks on a quest to unravel the secret of the curse and meets various people who also join his party.

And since the previous two GONZO shows will rape a novel and a manga, to complete things this show will have its way with a game (the worst kind of ... a MMORPG). Again pretty much unknown stuff under GONZO is a recipe for failure.

In 4 years time the competition that will decide who the next Queen shall be will start. The strongest warrior will continue to rule the country according to tradition and expand it. The contestants need only be older than 12 years. They need not be human, intelligent or even of that country. The rules for the tournament are simple: murder is allowed. Any weapon can be chosen. The winner is decided when one of the participants flees or can't move anymore. Such event is broadcasted trough a crystal sphere by the court's magic teacher to all population to see and enjoy.

In the 1930's EC, Europa is split by the Empire and the Federation, the two dominant military powers that divide the continent. The two powers struggled for ultimate supremacy, inevitably starting the E.W.II (Second Europan War) involving all of Europa. Gallia, a small independent nation situated between the two super powers now faces attacks from the Imperial Army due to its availability of Ragnite. The Gallian Army is overmatched by the Imperial forces and must retreat quickly. But just when the nation was about to surrender its capital city, one squad leader's unusual strategy defeats the Imperial Army. The name of that young lieutenant was Welkin Gunther and this is his story.

After the MMO- and TT- RPG, let's move to an adaption of a S-RPG, which has a long track of failures, including one from this studio (Persona). Animation and character designs look very good though and the responsibility for pacing falls to a person that has pulled out the job successfully in the past. On the other hand, the story itself does not look very promising.

As war spread throughout the country, the map of power underwent rapid and dramatic changes. In this never-ending conflict, one man finally seemed to be just one step from establishing total control over the country. He was the lord of Owari, the Sixth Heavenly Devil King. His name was Oda Nobunaga. But now, a young general clad in azure makes his unexpected appearance in this confused scenario, heading a huge army of cavalrymen from the Northern provinces. He is known as Date Masamune, the One-Eyed Dragon. And he is coming for Oda Nobunaga's head, and for ultimate supremacy!

The game is CAPCOM's rip-off of Dynasty Warriors, basically changing from Chinese history to Japanese. Anyway, not my thing ... the adaption looks too shounen for me and the stuff is certainly uninspiring.

From the Utawarerumono team we get yet another RPGish show (actually the game was a VN with some impossibly stupid battle system). Anyway, for what concerns the game everyone finds it boring, plot-wise, myself included. Hence I do not expect anything more from its adaption.

The only show that KyoAni has produced and I can safely suggest is Haruhi, probably I got tired from a 50 episode series that focused for a third time around the same characters and what worse each time they double the episode count [1st][2nd][3rd]. Now, back on topic. the manga has only a couple of volumes out and the pacing is handled by that idiot who butchered Kurokami last season with three (maybe four) times the source material to work with. On the other hand, it can end up so bad that it becomes good, like Sucky Star and Munto ;)

Thirteen-year-old Yasaka is a boy staying at his grandfather's house during his summer vacation. One day he entered a store and met Arashi, a beautiful sixteen-year old girl working there. After trying to protect her from a man who claims to have been hired by her family to take her back by force, Yasaka ran away with her and now she stays at his grandpa's place with him. It didn't take much time for Yasaka to figure out that his new friend is far from an ordinary girl, as she possesses mysterious powers. The plot thickens when he finds a sixty-year-old picture of Arashi and another girl named Kaja, and to the surprise of all Kaja suddenly appears, and just like Arashi, her appearance hasn't changed at all since then.

SHAFT's show this season is based on the new manga of Kobayashi Jin, who gave us School Rumble, which I hated since in 20+ volumes it managed to go absolutely nowhere, but loved because of the loveable characters. Source aside, the chief director is Oonuma of ef, with Shinbo on the side-watch. Also noteworthy is Takayama's involvement who managed to create an excellent adaption out of a mediocre manga (Ga-Rei), which will probably come into play considering the minimal amount of source material to work with.

But just when she is in front of the White House, Washington DC, she gets into trouble, and only the unexpected intervention of one of her fellow countrymen saves her. However, this man, who introduces himself as Akira Takizawa, is a complete mystery. He appears to have lost his memory. and he is stark naked, except for the gun he holds in one hand, and the mobile phone he's holding with the other hand. A phone that is charged with 8,200,000,000 yen in digital cash.

Another noitaminA show ... which with a couple of exceptions I found them impossible to watch. Then again studio and stuff are quite promising as was also the trailer.

The plot certainly has potential and is not something I would expect from this studio. It's important to note that the music is done by Kajiura Yuki (Rakyo, Noir, ...)!

Fortunately the church is under the mythical 7 Ghost protection. But who are the Ghosts really. Will Teito be free from the military's clutch, And what of his said mission to uncover the history. And who is the military's Chief-of-Staff Ayanami exactly. Teito's future seems to have spiraled into an unexpectedly perilous path.

Studio and stuff just work on anything, so they offer no indication of what to expect. My fears come from the summary and trailer which reminded me of that gay-fest, Kyou Kara Maou!

A mysteriously skilled fighter named Layfon Alseif enrolls in the Academy city of Zuellni and is immediately noticed by Nina Antalk, leader of the 17th Military Arts Unit. He then reluctantly joins her squad, uncertain of what future awaits him and his new teammates within the city as well as the impending dangers in the midst of a plagued world.

The first half was unexpectedly both interesting and watchable, despite the Dune/Third rip-off. Certainly a watch if not an exciting one for the spring season ;-)

Akiha is joined by an Inter-Colony Police officer named Itsuki Kannagi, a taciturn young girl named Honoka Kawai, and a robot named Imoko "Imo-chan" Shishidou.

Sunrise was redeemed through SoraKake for butchering Kurokami; and if this show is not enough reason, consider that they were self-sarcastic about the Code Gaess, Mai-Otome, etc. rip-off!

Winter '09 First Impressions

Not a bad season at all, a couple of interesting shows continued[1][2], SHAFT returned with a satire, MADHOUSE with action & plot and then we also got Regios. I must admit though that the show that I anticipated the most was a huge let down. Also there is plenty of fan-service around to fight against boredom ;)

SHAFT did it again! Art is excellent and fairly close to the manga, but the direction follows the distinct style of the studio that I adore. The story is also quite interesting, basically ridiculing marimite and its ilk. Finally, I should also make a special note on the characters, from Mariya, the trap; to her insulting maid, Matsurika; to Kanako, who is just not in touch with reality; there is even a 10-year old nekomimi dorm-supervisor, called GOD!?! Certainly, the source is just surreal and this is the right studio to animate it.

MADHOUSE finally decided to do a show that actually has a story for change and not just beautiful visuals. Though it might seem shallow at first by the second episode we got more character development then one season of any KyoAni show ;) I should also note that the 3D mecha fit seamlessly with the 2D characters and the background, no more those weird looking action scenes I got fed up with from GONZO and Sunrise.

The RPG of the season? Hm, three episodes in certainly it gives me strong RPG-vibes, but I rather focus your attention to the character development and the existence of a story, which has become rather rare lately. Aesthetically, it reminds me a lot of The Third, which in turn was heavily influenced by Dune. In any case, animation and art are pretty good, with interesting characters a story to boot.

I don't want to sound like a broken record by repeating the strong points of this show. This was such a let down. Keita turned into an emo-high-schooler, Akane into a stupid chick and we got a lot of new characters without any background just to die in a couple of episodes! What happened to my beloved manga? How could they just remove every funny panel and replace it with a kid angsting over his dead mother?

Complains aside, the action scenes are very well animated, you get the chance to watch a hilarious dubbing with the usual failures of american actors (airs only hours after the japanese version) and at least you can see Akane's rack gainaxing. Really sad replacement for one of my favorite manga, which turned from seinen to shounen.

This show just moves from endless exposition to techno-bubble ... enough, at least during the first episodes we got some nicely animated 2D action, which is now replaced with 3D-vehicles and continents moving around! At least Luke cut his hair and stopped being a stupid brat, though on the other hand he passed the stupidity to Tear, which has voiced some of the most ridiculous lines in RPG history.
