Quarter-finals

26/10
<<竜宮レナ@ひぐらしのなく頃に>>

(Ryuuguu Rena@Higurashi no Naku Koro ni)

1474 vs 1436

<<高町なのは@魔法少女リリカルなのはStrikerS>>
(Takamachi Nanoha@Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS)

Very tough match for Rena, she is up against the '05 winner and the only survivor from Nanoha series. I expect that the Nanoha-legion would run amok to support their last character! But don't get intimidated, Rena WILL take Nanoha home ;)

Amazingly close call for for Rena - only 38 votes difference! Coupled with another false victory due to large influx of fakes, this match almost gave me a heart attack. But in the end Nanoha was taken home!

27/10
<<三千院ナギ@ハヤテのごとく!>>
(Sanzenin Nagi@Hayate the Combat
Butler)

1334 vs 1272

<<泉こなた@らき☆すた>>
(Izumi Konata@Lucky Star)

The otaku showdown! Konata has a very dangerous low profile, compared to the Hiragii sisters (Tsukasa and Kagami). If a Sucky*Star character is going to win (doubtful, since japanese hate KyoAni - producer of Lucky Star) it is going to be Konata.

As I both hoped and expected the NEET with character development won against the otaku without ;P

28/10
<<古手梨花@ひぐらしのなく頃に>>
(Furude Rika@Higurashi no Naku Koro ni)

1473 vs 1191

<<ルイズ・フランソワーズ・ル・ブラン・ド・ラ・ヴァリエール@ゼロの使い魔>>
(Louise Françoise Le Blanc de La Vallière@Zero no Tsukaima)

Louise group victory was a surprise! hell, dominating her group wing was even a surprise! I expect that Rika's moe'ness will be boosted by hate for Louise.

This match was much easier then most people thought (not including myself). Rika won by almost 300 votes!

29/10
<<真紅@ローゼンメイデン オーベルテューレ>>
(Shinku@Rozen Maiden Ouverture)

1697 vs 1639

<<柊つかさ@らき☆すた>>
(Hiiragi Tsukasa@Lucky Star)

How can I put it, I couldn't care less, until I joined the AnimeSuki discussion. Now Mad Dog has done a pretty deceant job in persuading me that my vote to Tsukasa was a huge mistake!

Very marginal victory for Shiku. Anyway the bad news is that she is going to be a very tough opponent for Rika!

Saimoe 2007, Group Finals

16/10
Shana @ Shakugan no Shana
1068 vs 1086
Sanzenin Nagi @
Hayate no Gotoku

I can not vote in this, I love both characters! But it's nice that Nagi won, she is more fresh than Shana. Close call also ... 18 votes!

17/10
Izumi Konata @ Lucky Star
1166 vs 793
Konoe Konoka @ Negima!?

As much as I want Konoka to win, it is a lost cause!

18/10
Takamachi Nanoha @ Nanoha StrikerS
797 vs 673
Vita @ Nanoha StrikerS

My vote goes to Vita, the "eternal loli"; Nanoha, the "white devil" is just boring and uninteresting! But still she won, though it feels like only the Nanoha legions voted in this one, there wasn't much interest.

19/10
Yuno @ Hidamari Sketch
1047 vs 1183
Ryuguu Rena @
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni

Well, Rena needs your support!
She has gone through hell to be in the group finals!
Don't let her down ;)

20/10
Shinku @ Rozen Maiden
1249 vs 942
Nishizawa Ayumu @
Hayate no Gotoku

Please, everyone help Ayumu, the hungry "hamster" against the most annoying doll in the universe!
Good fight, but predictable result, the rozen-horde is something to be reckoned with.

21/10
Suiseiseki @ Rozen Maiden
1559 vs 1741
Hiragii Tsukasa @ Lucky Star

OK, just vote against the "doll"
Doll-hate won the day.

22/10
Kurada Sayuri @ Kanon 2006
789 vs 939
Furude Rika @
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni

Rika needs all her friends!!!
From the final vote count it seems that she doesn't have a lot. But at least they were enough to get her to the final eight. Hopefully, the fan-base of HiguKai will wake up if she faces a stronger opponent. On a sidenote non-japanese voter supported Sayuri, which is rather strange since I had really a hard time remembering even who she was!

23/10
Suigintou @ Rozen Maiden
1638 vs 1663
Louise @ Zero no Tsukaima

Goth-loli vs tsundere? If Suigintou wasn't a doll and didn't deafeat Fate, I would surely support her, but now I'm too bitter. On the other hand Louise was so stupid during the second season!
Wow, this was an epic battle! I really underestimated Louise or maybe the hatred towards Gin for Fate's early demise boosted Louise's popularity ...

Introduction

"I am the earth of which your body is made, I am aether that blows life into you and I am the fire that burn in your very soul. I was here before you and will still remain long after you have passed from all memory. Dare neither to speak of my name nor in it, for I am the Witch Queen, endless and all-knowing."
Inscription at the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus

Forbidden Names
"You only have to read Its name, not even loud, and It will come to you, only the you can be free. Lo, It never leaves you, It becomes part of you, engulfing all you have, seeing through your eyes, listening what you hear, indulging in what you feel ... thinking your thoughts ... It becomes you and you are consumed by It! Thus comes and passes The Bygone King."
Confession of Gilles de Rais

Lectors of the Word
"Everything is made in harmony, indecipherable in common eyes, but through faith and study of His wisdom, even the common man, like myself, saw His perfection in even the insignificant. Thus now is my sacred duty to propagate this knowledge, like a rain drop's ripples, before the storm"
Athanasius Kircher, after his ship was blown off-course to Rome

Betwixt & Between
"Never understood why so few have everything, while the nameless masses plunge in nothingness. Are we born different or maybe we live in different world, it could even be that they not even human. Then what are they, how they came to us, why we serve them in such a cruel bondage?"
Comment by the then 17 years old Robespierre, while waiting for the King

Penumbra
"It's my choice to take the wrong turn, enter a dimly light alley, just next to the shopping mall. I am always surprised by standing on the edge between these two alternate realities. So fascinating view both light and darkness, while standing between ... or is it betwixt?"
Fairuza Balk in an interview at Vanity Fair

Bygone
Liminality is a horror/mystery role-playing game, set in different historical eras, exploring through metaphor human nature and mass mentality. The setting is superficially like our world, but there are subtle differences that give rise to occult implication. During the next weeks each chapter would be expanded with information concerning the game in general and its first campaign location and characters. The game's system is designed both for table-top and on-line gaming and its main objectives is to be realistic and character driven, hiding its complexities from the player and hindering power-play.

Postscript
  • This is a game, has absolutely nothing to do with reality, it's just for amusement.
  • Non of the above were ever actually said by the people mentioned. They are solly the product of my imagination.
  • Parental Advisory: A lot of controversial issues are discussed and analyzed in an adult and unorthodox way.

Setites after LotN

The Setites, in V:tES, is one of the clans that its playstyle is still reminescent of the archtypical old school Malkavian stealth and bleed. It was the only independent clan that actually faired well even before Final Nights came out. After FN, they were able to win around four tournaments per year, mainly due to the crypt boost they got (from 15 vampires with serpentis before FN, they reached 30 after). The next boost came with Kindred Most Wanted and some auxillary cards that the set offered. Now with LotN, a lot of old strategies are enforced, even some obsolute like corruption, but apart from that I really can not say that we are going to see something really new. On the other hand, some crippling weaknesses of the clan are addressed, bounce (though indirectly) and influancing. Still intercept remains the biggest weakness of the clan, since generating even a single point is very difficult task!

For discussion check the comments or the newsgroup.

The new crypt cards offer more or less what we already had, discipline-wise. Belle, Ahmose, Marla & Sisocharis are good and solid weenies. Abdelsobek just begs to become an anarch (he's able to use 8 out of the 12 3-way cards) and he also has an ability similar to Mylan Horseed. Halim is similar to Black Lotus, with superior dominate and but without presence; he also bestows stealth on mummies while he is ready. Renenet & Clea are solid mid-caps with all the in-clan disciplines. Ogwon offers another way to reduce opposing vampires' blood. Arnulf has a very strong ability that aids blocking and coupled with his auspex, offers the best chance the clan has in defending. Sundervere is a powerful bleeder (cardless upto 3, without permanents can reach 7, just one below his capacity and Pulse or Heart 9!!!), has superior auspex and he is red list, which translates as prime rush target for every combat competent deck. Pentweret is funny because he has all of the Salubri disciplines at inferior and from a serious perspective, a powerful anti-imbued ability (remember that the Imbued are 0-cost allies). Porphyrion is just bad design for two reasons; first he has an ability related to a card not yet printed (Treaty of Laibach is going to be a promo) and second he would be a better addition to the Ravnos than his own clan with CHI for OBF! Shemti looks totaly nuts in the artwork and has an ability similar to Crocodile Temple (enhancing Temptation). Seterpenre has a weird and probably useless ability. Last but not least, comes Nakhthorheb, who has the same ability as Eze, untap during your minion phase, which just overwhelmingly powerful! and if this is not enough corrupted minions can block him! oh he also has +1 strength, but than again who cares ;) This guy must be in every deck that uses his disciplines and the gretest minion is not below 4! namely all setite decks!

Discipline distribution of G4+5 is:

SER/ser -> 16+9=25
OBF/obf -> 14+9=23
PRE/pre
-> 13+8=21
THA/tha -> 3+2=5
AUS/aus -> 2+3=5
POT/pot -> 3+1=4
DOM/dom -> 2+2=4
NEC/nec -> 1+3=4
FOR/for -> 0+4=4
CEL/cel -> 0+2=2
one with CHI
one each with obe or vic

The new clan cards offer some possibilities. Cave of Apples, for example, is a huge boost to corruption strategy, since it lets any setite corrupt without a card any younger minion, including imbued! Mesu Bedshet is also a very effective card, bringing crypt cards to the uncontrolled reason and provided you do it right, also put on each two free pool. Spell of Life complements the previous action, since all those uncontrolled vampires can enter play as mummy allies. Speaking of mummies, Nephren-Ka is decent, but still nothing game-breaking. Finally, setites got Mokole Blood, which is just amazing, not only you temporary expand your hand size, you choose the cards from either library or ash heap and even after playing them, it burned, so you can bring the next one! Serpentis offers less usefull cards, Eternal Mask, for example would be a could addition to a weenie combat deck, not setites. Revalation of Ecstasy, on the other hand, is a very strong complement to the cave, since it in addition to corrupting, it also taps the chosen minion, plus it has no capacity limitation! Set's Curse is to expensive and I'd rather stick with the old pre/ser steal ally cards. Divine Image is one failed try to boost the setite combat potential. Cobra Fangs is a decent threat against combat deck.

Presence's Public Trust is very powerful (and similar to Undue Influence). Dream World is a huge boost to breed decks. Bloodlust, apart from being weak, is totally out of the discipline's character. Unholy Penance is pretty good for intercept decks, thus not the setites. Obfuscate was discussed in detail in the Assamite article, I'll just spotlight in the cards
relevant to the clan. Into Thin air is a huge boost to breed decks, especially when coupled with Dream World from above. Hide the Mind is effective since auspex still is the strongest and most common intercept discipline. Finally, there is Mental Maze, which is free for setites, though the blocking limitation prohibits its use to very few decks.As for off-clan disciplines, celerity's Precision, is a very effective against bounce.

Eternals of Sirius is simply overwhelmingly powerful! saves you five transfers and one pool, meaning if you're fourth or fifth you can bring out a 9-cap in your first round! Powerbase: Zürich is another boost to influencing and also impossible to lose it with a stealth-bleed deck. Influencing support was one way the clan's lack of bounce was addressed, another option is Narrow Minds, which makes your opponents' bouncing more expensive. Finally, there is the disciplineless bounce with Lost in the Translation.

Since setites have presence, I think it best to address the new political actions. Reckless Agitation is amazing, but still on par with KRC, just be cautious since this card will draw hate by two players. Jericho Founding is just mediocre. Can't Take it with You is very good, since a lot of decks depend on permanents. Permanent Vacation is one more anti-imbued card from this set, but still even without imbued it's going to be useful against Warghouls, Hordes and others. Finally, there is Warrant make it's target a Red List in all but the name, so no trophies and goodies ... why make a card this?

It won't be an exaggeration to say that setites are the most newbie friendly of four clans. The preconstructed is fairly good, by itself and with the cards that can be found in the boosters, a competative deck can be created (see below for a suggestion). There are also three older preconstructed that have a lot of useful cards. Guruhi offer Giant's Blood, Legendary Vampire, 3 Minion Tap, Sudden Reversal, Awe, 4 Bewitching Oration, 3 Voter Captivation, 2 Wake with Evening's Freshness and many political actions. Istharri have 2 Blood Doll, Heidelberg, Sudden Reversal, 3 more Wakes, a Marijava Ghoul, Entrancement, 5 Enchant Kindred and 3 Legal Manipulation. Finally, from KMW there's the Baali preconstructed, which has Sahira & Suren, 3 Blood Dolls, 5 Legal Manipulation, another Enticement, a Temptation, extra stealth (which is really necessary), 5 Wakes, but most importantly a Mylan Horseed. KMW boosters also have several solid group 4 setites, Ferraille (imperative for voting), Waters of Duat, Disengage (must for S:CE defense) and Heart of the City. Not a lot, but is economic for drafting, the other option is trade. Again 3rd edition offers a lot of cards that are generally useful both for play and trade. Also LoB is also a good option to expand your collection and play options, if you chose the preconstructed.
Finally, the FN preconstructed and boosters won't really aid your collection, they are more or less obsolute for what the setites care.

For deck suggestion I will restrain myself in card selection, since the whole article is primarily for new players. I take for granted that a player has 2 clan starters and has either drafted 9 LothN boosters (approximately the same as buying a whole booster box). Thus the limitation are no rares, up to 5 commons, 2 uncommons & vampires, plus whatever cards you get from the two starters.

The basic concept is to speed influencing and save pool (Eternals, Mesu and Public Trust), get as many as possible minions and bleed at stealth. Defense is the biggest problem, while 12 CE will stop most Psyche/TP Tracking combat, IG can only be dealt with Mental Maze, so if you face a lot of potence combat increase their number. Bleed/Vote defense also is thin, but this is a general problem for the clan. You could add the two Dummy Corporation from the preconstructed, as well as Ecstasies and more Confusions; removing either stealth/denial (if you don't face a lot of intercept) or combat defense (if there is not much rushing in your metagame). Finally, there are 17 stealth and 6 denial modifiers which is not enough to pass through dedicated intercept, so I would suggest to increase them at the expense of either bleed modifiers or reactions.

David Cronenberg

David Paul Cronenberg is one of the most unique directors. He is a horror film specialist, particularly he focuses on vicissitude. The psychological deviation of his protagonists unnaturally affects their body, twisting it and dehumanizing it. This sets them apart from society (both visually and socially) and leads them to a ceaseless downward spiral.

Born on 15.3.1943 in Toronto (Canada), he switched to literature from science, which he was originally studying. After university he made two sketch-films (Transfer in 1966 and From the Drain in 1967), followed by two short ones (Stereo in 1969 and Crimes of the Future in 1970).

During the 70s he begun the partnership Ivan Reitman, which along with the funding from the canadian goverment, lead to his first two full-length features Shivers (1975) and Rabid (1977). His early films are characterized by the breakdown of society, as a result of humanity's hubris.

His following films shift the focus from society to the protagonist, Cronenbeberg begins to focus on a helpless hero who becomes a pawn of organized groups. In The Brood
(1979) this concept was at its infancy, thus the backing of the villain is only implied A step further was taken in Scanners (1981), the antagonist is a powerful corporation supported by an uncaring and corrupt government. Finally, comes The Dead Zone (1983), based on Stephen King's novel, where the hero has to overcome the ultimate power (as is the popular perception) of the western world, the president!

Videodrome (1983), marks the transition from social to personal implications. There the sleazy protagonists becomes the pawn of two ruthless sects. Ultimately, caught in a web of lies and deception, he becomes unable to tell the difference between reality and fantasy. He becomes a deviant on the fringes of society. What is amazing is that his decadent path manifests physically, as his body twists and alters according to his darkest fears (which are also his desires).

This shift of focus to personal degeneration is dominating Cronenberg's later films. In the remake of The Fly (1986), society and its institutions are untouched and we only see how hubris destroys its sinner and affects only his immediate social circle. With Dead Ringers (1988) there is also a notable shift away from sci-fi and into rationally intelligible events. This takes it's ultimate form with the hallucinations the protagonists experiences in the Naked Lunch (1991), which is based on the novel by William Burroughs.

The loss of identity is further explored in Madam Butterfly (1993) which is inspired by the opera of Giacomo Puccini. Crash (1996) delves deeper into the assumption of a new identity as a solution to the dead-ends of social life. Finally, in eXistenZ (1999), we witness the absolute inability of a human to identify himself, leading to constant assumption of shallow computer game character roles.

With Spider (2002), Cronenberg completely ignores the social implication and focuses only on a personal level to the dramatic life the deranged protagonist has to bear. Dementia is also the driving force behind A Histoy of Violence (2005), but here we also see the social implication returning and being masterfully intertwined with the personal experiences of the hero.

Saimoe 2007, Round 3

For the group finals, look here!

Since 2002, members of the 2chan host a fan voting tournament, called the Saimoe Tournament. From 2006 and on, 2chan users obliged foreign otaku by putting up an english version of their rules page. Here you can find these instruction. Schedule and the results so far are at the end of the article.
I didn't even bother with the first two rounds since I didn't new even half the characters, but now things are becoming interesting, with only 32 girls left (unfortunately, Jun -the only boy- lost pretty early). I will present the contestants by series. Remember you can click the images to enlarge them.

Moe (萌え) is a Japanese slang word originally referring to love for characters in video games or anime and manga. It is also used within anime fandom, and even in some anime itself, as an interjection referring to a character the speaker considers to be a moekko. As with most aspects of fandom, manga and anime itself can be critical or supportive of moe otaku depending on a specific writer's opinion.

From Hayate no Gotoku we have Nagi, Isumi, Izumi and Ayumu. The first two were no surprise, but I was quite puzzled to see the other two and not Maria. In any case Nagi passed very easily, not only because of her moeness, but probably because her opponents were pretty much worthless. Partially, this is the case with Isumi, she had two easy rounds, but with stronger opponents (Siesta@Zero & Natsuki@Mai).
Izumi also passed easily, which was a surprise for me, Izumi never impressed me throughout the series. The biggest surprise was Ayumu, who took out Teana@Nanoha in the second round, but in any case she deserved it. Unfortunately Hinagiku didn't make despite her overwhelming victory on round one, because she was facing Runa@Seto. Finally, Maria was taken out early by Kagami@LuckyStar, in a very hard match, while Saki the other maid came last in the second round facing Henrietta@Zero and Tamao@Str.Panic.

The dolls of Rozen Maiden prove one more time how many fans they have. With only an OVA out this year to keep viewers interested they managed to also to put four characters in the third round, including a human! Suiseiseiki (winner of '06 and finalist of '05) and her obnoxious personality had two easy rounds. The spoiled Shinku (3rd in '05) also passed with easy victories. The trash called Suigintou took out in a breathtaking second round match Fate@Nahona (1790 vs 1624 votes) !!! The surprise came from Tomoe, who very lucky in being in an easy group.

The "killer lolis" from Higurashi no Naku Koro ni didn't fare that well, Satoko was crushed between the epic clash of Suigintou@Rozen Maiden and Fate@Nahoha, see above. Rena made it after a couple of easy rounds. Not following the fate of her sister, Mion passed. Finally, the ultra-cute after defying death more than a hundred times (watch the latest episode to understand) goes on strong.

I shouldn't state for a third time how much I was disappointed that Fate lost to Suigintou, because I am becoming boring and repetative ;) So after the best character of this crossbreed between shounen and mahou shoujo with the seamless use of engirishu, who passed from Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha? First of all the winner of '05, Nanoha, now 19-years old with clear towards her own sex, became a foster parent of Vivio (who was also her opponent in the second round), etc. Next is Vita (the goth loli of the series, since Fate grew up), the former knight and now trainer of the recruits that was bleeding to death for 4-5 episodes straight, only to recover for the happy ending and finally her ex-master and commander of the special "something" unit, Hayate, who was supposed to sacrifice herself for the good of the world, but the scriptwriters changed their mind and she passed the second half of the series blowing up stuff or commanding nameless hordes of techno-mages to do so. Vita was the only one who had a hard match in the second round against Matsuri@sola. Notice that none of the new characters, in which this season was focusing, made it.

With Lucky Star there were no surprises the three leads passed. Konata (the female otaku), had a slightly difficult second round against Nayuki@Kannon, which by the way is way cuter. Kagami (the tsundere) had an epic first match against Maria@Hayate (1356 vs 1161) and again I would prefer to see maid pass, but that's life. Finally, Tsukasa (sloppy, absent-minded, kind, etc) crushed, stomped, massacred all opposition, actually in both rounds her opponents together were getting less votes then she alone!

Seto no Hanayome was missing Shiranui to begin with, then Maki and Iinchou/Amazones split the fans votes so their opponent Rain@Futago Hime won and Mawari had also a tough battle, but finally lost to Mai@Kannon. This left only the two leads, who nevertheless took out very popular characters. San took out Shion@Higurashi, Miyuki@Kanon and Souseiseki@Rozen Maiden. Luna won against Subaru@Nanoha and Hinagiku@Hayate.

Utawarerumono
characters in my opinion have some of the best designs, as well as very interesting background stories. Unfortunately, the anime failed to show both aspects, the animation was cheap (killing the character design) and the plot pacing was weird, really at some points it tested my patience. Taking these factors into acount, I didn't expect for the the character to go well and they didn't, only the dog-sisters made it, since they are the most stereotypical of Utawarerumono's characters. Aruru (the younger sister) is the typical loli and Eruru (the senior sister) is the Yamato Nadeshiko of the series. Very unimpressive results and they really do not do justice to the game ... piety.

For the end I left the tsundere Eri, Shana and her clone Louise. Shana had to face Evangeline@Negima twice, since they came to a draw in the first round and even the second the result was still close. In both match the other two characters were totally non-existance, the got together half the votes one of two first achieved! Now on the other hand, Louise suffered from a very bad season of Zero no Tsukaima and she barely made it when in the second round she won by only two votes (797 vs 795) against Mai@Kanon! Finaly, Eri from School Rumble had easy matches and still her popularity is high, probably because the manga still goes on strong in Japan.

With the rest I won't even bother, because I either find the characters or the series painfully boring to watch/talk about, but for complicity's sake here they are:

Miyako @ Hidamari Sketch
